FIRE PREVENTION

The Camp Taylor Fire Protection District recognizes that the most important element in fire safety is the prevention of the fire hazard. The department created a Fire Prevention Bureau to address the issue as often and in as many ways as possible.

Each year the Bureau visits schools to conduct fire drills and hold inspections for fire safety violations. Educational programs are set up to promote fire safety in the home and work place.

Camp Taylor, in conjunction with the other Jefferson County Fire Departments, participates in a smoke detector give-away program. Project Firewatch, as the program is called, enables residents who cannot afford to purchase a smoke detector to receive one. In some cases, the Fire Department will assist in installation.

Fire Prevention inspections of area businesses are conducted not only to check for fire safety violations, but to familiarize firefighting personnel with the floor plan and contents of the buildings. In the 22 years of operating under the State Fire Marshal's Office, the inspection in the District increased from 81 to 900. All facilities where violations were found, corrected the violations with out need to go to Frankfort for a hearing.

Buildings under construction can benefit from routine inspections made to ensure that they adhere to the building codes. The codes are established to protect the occupants form hazards such as fire.

Classes are offered to businesses, ranging from use of fire extinguishers to fire brigade training. A comprehensive list of businesses, containing phone numbers, is maintained for notification in the event of an emergency.

Fire Prevention Week provides the fire service with a unique opportunity to pass on valuable information to residents and business owners. Children learn life saving and fire prevention practices that stay with them the rest of their lives. Prevention of the fire is the best fire protection.
